Packing for a week of respite is not much different from packing for a week away anywhere else, with a few things worth getting right before you travel. Your pack includes a suggested checklist, and this is the short version.
Medication
This is the one to sort out early. Medication must arrive either in a blister pack or in a clearly labelled container with clear dosing instructions. We keep a medication administration and recording booklet, and everything given or declined is recorded in it.
Your medication is stored in a fixed cabinet fitted discreetly inside your wardrobe, or somewhere else suitable depending on your needs, and the team lead holds the key or code. If you manage your own medication at home, we support you to keep doing that here. The Person in Charge goes through your medication with you before every stay, so nothing is left to guesswork.
Medical card and appointments
Bring your medical card details. If you have a doctor, dentist or optician appointment that falls during your stay, staff will support you to get to it. Private consultant fees are paid by you on the day.
Clothes and laundry
Pack for the weather we actually get, not the weather we hope for: layers, a rain jacket and comfortable shoes for walks and outings. There is a laundry room with a washing machine and tumble dryer, and you are welcome to use it during your stay. We do ask that you accept we cannot be responsible for accidental damage to clothing that happens in the wash.
Money for the week
Bring some spending money for anything outside the respite package — a boat trip, a session at the hydrotherapy pool, a takeaway, bingo, a trip into Tralee or Killarney, or a hairdressing or beauty appointment. Staff can help you keep track of spending and will record and receipt anything handled on your behalf.
Your own comforts
Bring the things that make a place feel like yours: books, music, a tablet or phone, CDs for the lounge player. Anything you bring is added to your inventory when you arrive, so it is accounted for. There is guest Wi-Fi throughout the house, and we have iPads set up for video calls, with accessible features for anyone with a visual impairment, plus an adapted phone for texts and WhatsApp calls.
Equipment
Bring any aids or equipment you use day to day, and tell us in advance about anything that needs power or space — night-time breathing equipment such as CPAP, for example. Staff can support you with it, and knowing beforehand means your room is ready when you arrive.
Food you like
Breakfast, dinner and evening meals are provided, and you can help cook if you enjoy that. Special diets and religious requirements are catered for, with menus ordered a day ahead. You can also claim a cupboard and a shelf in the pantry fridge for your own bits and pieces — just ask the team lead for access.
A few things to leave at home
The house is non-smoking throughout, and that includes vapes and e-cigarettes.
The full checklist comes in your pack, and the Resident’s Guide covers everything in detail. Any questions, ring (066) 912 9000 and we will talk it through.
